چکیده

Several decades before Gaetano Kanizsa (1913–1993) became famous for his drawings of modally completing flat triangles and amodally completing flat pacmen, there was an American illustrator named Coles Phillips (1880–1927), who exploited modal and amodal completion to generate the impression of volumes. At his peak of creativity and productivity, just over one hundred years ago, he was among the most sought-after graphic artists for magazine covers, and the envy of his peers. For example, the now more famous Norman Rockwell said of his art:

The interpolation of object and surface structure.

One of the main theoretical challenges of vision science is to explain how the visual system interpolates missing structure. Two forms of visual completion have been distinguished on the basis of the phenomenological states that they induce. Modal completion refers to the formation of visible surfaces and/or contours in image regions where these properties are not specified locally. Amodal comp...

Modal and amodal completion generate different shapes.

Mechanisms of contour completion are critical for computing visual surface structure in the face of occlusion. Theories of visual completion posit that mechanisms of contour interpolation operate independently of whether the completion is modal or amodal--thereby generating identical shapes in the two cases. This identity hypothesis was tested in two experiments using a configuration of two ove...

Setting boundaries: brain dynamics of modal and amodal illusory shape completion in humans.

Normal visual perception requires differentiating foreground from background objects. Differences in physical attributes sometimes determine this relationship. Often such differences must instead be inferred, as when two objects or their parts have the same luminance. Modal completion refers to such perceptual "filling-in" of object borders that are accompanied by concurrent brightness enhancem...

A common mechanism for illusory and occluded object completion.

New phenomena and results are reported that implicate a common contour interpolation mechanism in illusory and occluded (modal and amodal) object completion. In 3 experiments, a speeded classification task was used to study novel quasimodal displays in which occluded and illusory contours join. Results showed the same advantages in speed and accuracy over control displays for quasimodal, illuso...

Created unequal: Temporal dynamics of modal and amodal boundary interpolation

In this study we manipulate the distribution of contrast polarity reversals in inducing configurations to create novel variants of modal and amodal completion. The novel variants, better equated in their geometric and photometric characteristics offer a superior way to probe similarities and differences in the temporal dynamics that underlie different forms of perceptual completion. We use dot ...
